The main thing I remember is Columbo saying to the suspected killer that the message, which implicated the killer, was “deathbed testimony” and was very powerful evidence. Perhaps you mean the episode called “ Candidate for Crime” but it doesn’t quite fit the bill of the episode you described. Having watched all Columbo episodes more than once I can assure you they are full of annoying inconsistencies that in my opinion are wrong and unexplainable.

Having been somewhat disappointed with season 3, I have to admit I was quite impressed with season 4 and my only niggle was that it was over so quickly. Lol, not that great but entertaining! Way too many things could go wrong, not to mention he might be seen once he was out of the hospital.
Was it already a pet of his? Fun moments abound, such as a scene in which clues lead Columbo to a soup kitchen where he is mistaken by a nun for a bum. There has to be some clue which turns him toward Danziger out of a shipload of suspects.

In one episode he cannot convince a nun that he is not a homeless person so he gives up and decides he might as well get a free meal at the shelter.
