Sea Your History: 20th Century Royal Navy

Sea Your History: 20th Century Royal Navy at the Royal Naval Museum

Open daily from 10am

Sea Your History is a special exhibition focusing on the real experiences of the Navys people in combat and under stress, doing their day to day work, at rest and play, at home and abroad, at sea and on land during a century of almost continuous conflict and rapid technological and social change.

The exhibition will include colourful, surprising and often touchingly intimate items of both official and personal material selected from the collections of the Royal Naval Museum, the Fleet Air Arm Museum, the Royal Marines Museum and the Royal Navy Submarine Museum.

The exhibition is part of a larger project to make the Museums 20th century collections available to the public via a new website, www.seayourhistory.org.uk. Visitors to the exhibition will also have the opportunity to explore this website.

Supported by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project is a joint effort by the four museums, Portsmouth Royal Dockyard Historical Trust and the Mary Rose Trust.

'The Solent Aviation Art Society Exhibition'

The Solent Aviation Art Society (SAAS) was formed in January 2001 to increase the appreciation and interest in aviation art within the Solent Area. SAAS meets monthly in various museums locally for painting and drawing days and holds exhibitions annually to display its work.

Members of all ages and experience are welcome.

Voyage East: Lantern procession & fireworks

Friday 31st October: Procession starts in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard at 6pm.

As the year draws to a close The Emperor and the Burrokeets will return to Gunwharf Quays, and proudly lead a beautiful lantern procession to the waterfront for a spectacular fireworks finale produced by Walk The Plank on Friday 31st October .

Visitors can join in the FREE workshops from Monday 27th October to create their own bespoke papercut lantern and be part of the dramatic illuminated procession on Friday 31st October.

As part of the celebrations the Mary Rose Museum and Ship Hall, Action Stations and the Royal Naval Museums Victory Gallery will be offering a FREE, late opening taster of their collections for those taking part in the procession from 5pm until 6pm. The taster visits will be marked with a vibrant drumming display from Dhol drummers on site at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard from 5pm.
